How to plant a potted climbing rose in a pot

Planting a climbing rose in a pot can add beauty and structure to your garden, provided you choose the right container and follow proper planting steps. Climbing roses can thrive in pots as long as they are 12ft or shorter, and with the right care, they will grow beautifully.

You can plant your climbing rose in a pot at any time of the year, but make sure the plant is well-hydrated before you start.

Pot or container - at least 2 feet deep x 2 feet wide

An obelisk or other support structure

Small stones/broken terracotta crocs/gravel/recycled polystyrene

Spade

Fork

Large bucket of water

David Austin® Mycorrhizal Fungi

Watering can

John Innes No 3 compost

Good quality multi-purpose compost

Gloves

Select a pot that is at least 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide and has proper drainage holes. Dark pots may absorb more heat, so be prepared to water more frequently. Add drainage to the bottom of the pot.
