How to plant a potted climbing rose in a pot

Planting a climbing rose in a pot can add beauty and structure to your garden, provided you choose the right container and follow proper planting steps. Climbing roses can thrive in pots as long as they are 12ft or shorter, and with the right care, they will grow beautifully.

You can plant your climbing rose in a pot at any time of the year.

Choosing the right container

Select a pot that is at least 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide and has proper drainage holes. Dark pots may absorb more heat, so be prepared to water more frequently. Add drainage to the bottom of the pot.

Step by step guide

Step 1
Prepare the planting mix

Mix together with good quality multi-purpose compost and John Innes No 3 compost in a 50/50 ratio. This blend will provide a nutrient-rich environment for your rose.
Step 2
Fill the pot

Begin by putting the broken crocs/gravel/recycled polystyrene in the bottom of the pot. Next, fill the pot with the prepared potting mix. Firm the soil gently as you go to remove any air pockets. Stop when the pot is about halfway full.
Step 3
Position the rose

Place the rose centrally in the pot. The bud union (where the rose is grafted onto the rootstock) should be about 2 inches below the soil level.
STEP 4
Remove the rose from the pot

Gently remove the rose from its nursery pot by tapping the sides. Tease the roots out from the root ball. Sprinkle David Austin^® Mycorrhizal Fungi on the roots to promote better root development and enhance disease resistance.

Plant the rose

Position the rose in the prepared pot and fill in around it with the remaining potting mix. Firm the soil gently to eliminate air pockets and ensure the plant is secure.
STEP 6
Install the support structure

Place an obelisk or other support structure in the pot and train the stems in a spiral around the outside of the obelisk. Use flexi tie to attach any stems to the structure, guiding the plant as it grows.

Water generously

Give the rose a generous watering after planting. Keep an eye on it, especially in dry, warm, or windy conditions, and water as needed. For the first year, treat the rose as if it’s newly planted, providing regular water and monitoring its progress. Though roses are hardy, they may show initial signs of stress or slower growth. With proper care, they will settle into their new pot and thrive.
