Using Roses on Arches, Pergolas and Obelisks

Need space for more roses? Arches, pergolas and obelisks are the best way to create an abundance of blooms in gardens and small outdoor spaces. By bringing the blooms up and over, you can walk under them, fully immersing yourself within the roses.

Pergolas and arches require larger ramblers and climbers than obelisks, which generally only need roses of between 6ft to 8ft. Repeat flowering varieties are an ideal choice for blooms throughout the summer, however once-flowering ramblers can also be used, perhaps planted alongside a late-flowering clematis to prolong the blooming season.

Arches of Abundance

Create a cottage style garden with a painted wooden arch, there is no need to be too formal. Arches allow roses to span areas where there is high traffic, as well as those that are not suitable for planting below.

Pillars of Potential

Turn a simple pillar into a pretty perfumed masterpiece by covering with a climbing or small rambling rose. Although basic in shape, a pillar provides the perfect support for a rose to climb. From porches and balconies to carports and pergolas, the potential of a pillar should not be overlooked.
